Whether you are joining us as a new customer, moving to a new home or leaving Newport City Homes, here are some useful tips for moving house.

Declutter before you start packing

Moving home is a great opportunity to declutter and there are several ways to dispose of unwanted items including:

Plan for arrangements you need to make

Before the big day it might be helpful to think about arrangements for any the following:

  • any childcare arrangements on moving day
  • how best to move your pets
  • managing your fridge and frozen foods
  • cleaning and/or any repairs needed
  • clearing any debt or charges related to the property
  • returning the keys to your landlord

Pack smart

Packing and unpacking can take up a lot of your time during the moving stages. It can help to:

  • Label boxes as you pack them. This will make it easier to find things much quicker in your new home.
  • Pack a box of essentials including items such as milk, tea/coffee and toilet paper.

This will help you find your essential items easily on the other side of the move.

Tell people you’re moving!

It may sound obvious, but in addition to telling family and friends about your moving plans, you may need to inform some official people too.

This could include:

  • utilities providers, eg gas or electric companies
  • housing and/or other benefits
  • bank/building society/Post Office accounts
  • doctors and dentists
  • schools and colleges

Use a postal redirection service

Royal Mail offer a redirection service for periods of one, three, six or 12 months.

The iammoving.com website offers a free online change of address service. You can save time and money by notifying up to 1,500 organisations about your new address details online.

Budget for any goods you need

When buying goods for your home, think about what you want versus what you actually need. You may not be able to get everything straight away, so think about the essentials.

There are many stores that will sell items to you on finance without completing credit checks. Please be aware of the costs involved when paying them off. A good starting point is to look at what the annual fixed repayment (APR) will be. All companies must legally tell you how much the APR will be.

If you are struggling financially, or thinking that you won’t manage as a result of completing your budget sheet, there is a lot of help and support available.

Buying second hand goods

Second hand goods can offer a much more affordable solution when purchasing goods for you home. Raven House Trust and Newport Wastesavers offer good quality second hand furniture and other household items.

You can also find second-hand goods in charity shops, Facebook marketplace, Freecycle or Freeads.
