If you need to turn the water off in your home for any reason, from stopping a leak to installing an appliance, you’ll need to know where to find your stop tap and how to use it.

Step-by-step: Identifying and using your stop tap

Your stop tap is usually located under your kitchen sink or in a location near the kitchen. Check your cupboards or pantries nearby to find your stop tap.

Once you’ve found your stop tap, turn the water on via the faucet. It needs to be set to a gentle flow.

Return to your stop tap, and turn the tap clockwise. You’ll know when you’ve turned it far enough as the water will slow down and eventually stop at the faucet.

To turn the water back on, slowly turn the faucet anti-clockwise. The water should then return to it’s usual flow out of the faucet.
