Architects visited Somerton Primary School to inspire pupils to look at careers in designing homes and communities.

We are talking to the local community about plans to regenerate and refurbish the Somerton area.

We invited two architects from Oxford Architects to the school so pupils could share their views and learn more about architecture.

Sarah Rodda, deputy head teacher, said: “Classes from year 3 to year 6 enjoyed taking part throughout the day. They learned so much about architecture and impressed the architects by recognising some of the famous buildings that were used in the presentation.”

Andrew Brown, from Oxford Architects, said: “We really wanted to engage with the children about what they think about their area. The children really used their imaginations to give us some great ideas on what they would like to see in Somerton. They really enjoyed taking part in the activities and the freedom that design can offer. They are definitely future architects in the making.’’

Laura Palfrey, development partnerships coordinator, said: “We are still looking at the various options across the Somerton Regeneration area.  Over the last year we have been engaging and consulting with the community on what they would like to see. It was great to get the thoughts and views of local children. It’s their future and they deserve to have their voice heard.

“We did this through some fun games where they had to draw their perfect house, decorate a ‘Welcome to Somerton’ sign and work together to build a cardboard bridge that could hold heavy objects.

“Our architects spoke about how design can influence buildings and places. The children asked lots of questions and were enthusiastic about this as a possible career which was great to hear.”
