We know how important it is to stay financially secure this Winter. As the temperatures start decreasing, here are the top five energy providers who could save you money throughout the colder months.

British Gas

British Gas is offering help to its customers facing financial challenges through The British Gas Energy Support Fund. From 2 October, if eligible, you may be able to get:

  • British Gas financial grants of up to £1,500 if you’re struggling with bills
  • £250 of non-repayable credit if you’re on a prepayment meter
  • a debt write-off if you have no means to repay

Even though this support is exclusively for British Gas customers, they can also help people with other energy suppliers. The Bounce-Back Checklist tool may help maximise your income, and they also advise on energy saving tips to help you get the most out of your money this winter.

EDF Energy

EDF are committed to supporting customers through the cost of living crisis. They’re rolling back the price of standing charges to their April 2021 levels for customers in most need.

If you claim Warm Homes Discount, you’ll be eligible for the rollback. This will be applied to your account as £30 credit in December. This means that standing charges will be an average of 56p per day, instead of 87p, from January to March.

EDF will also be offering a "fresh start" this winter by clearing customer debts, alongside payment matching top-ups for those on pre-payment meters. If you’re eligible, you’ll be contacted directly.

E.ON Next

The Winter Affordability Support Scheme is offering help to customers from now until March 2024. This includes:

  • 25% off standard variable prices for those with no existing debt
  • 50% off standard variable prices for those with existing energy debt who sign up for the support scheme (if you keep on top of payments until the end of the term, debt will be written off)
  • energy grants and white good replacements available
  • free home insulation through the Great British Insulation Scheme

This Winter Affordability Support Scheme is exclusively available to existing E.ON Next customers with a household income of less than £19,000 a year, and customers who have medical dependency needs with a household income of less than £31,000 a year.

E.ON Next energy specialists have started contacting eligible customers via post, text, email and phone.

OVO/BOOST/SSE

OVO is offering a support package again this year and, like last year, the scheme gives eligible customers practical help like free smart thermostats for room temperature control, electric throws, and boiler servicing.

OVO Energy, Boost, or SSE energy Services customers can apply, and the applications open from 16 October 2023.

Octopus Energy

Octopus Energy's Octo Assist Fund offers support options based on circumstances and needs - including access to existing schemes, monetary credits from the fund, or personalised account support.

It's a simple tool that asks a series of questions about the customer's financial situation. From here, it'll be decided what the most appropriate means to help is and just how they'll be able to support.

As well as taking advantage of some of these offers, it’s worth reviewing your finances throughout the year. Money Helper’s Budget Planner will give you an idea of household spending and where you might be able to save money.

It’s always a good idea to get your priority spending in order. Paying your rent on time and making sure your household bills, like water bills, are budgeted for gives you peace of mind and makes sure that all your priorities are taken care of.
