We know that fly-tipping is a major concern for our customers. Like them, we want our communities to be safe, tidy, and free from waste.

Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste and can be anything from a single bag of rubbish being left next to a litter bin, to a large amount of dumped waste including unwanted household items.

Fly-tipping makes our local communities unpleasant for those who live there, it damages the environment, threatens wildlife, and increases fire risk.

It’s also expensive and time consuming to remove – money and time we’d rather spend on improving our existing homes and communities and building new homes to address the housing crisis being felt across the city. That’s why we’ll always try to find those responsible for fly-tipping and work with our partners to take action against them.

Our partnership with Newport City Council has extended to include enforcement actions to hold those who repeatedly fly-tip and damage our local environment accountable for their actions.

We’ve been working in partnership with NCC since October 2020, and have taken action on over 200 instances of fly-tipping on our land around the city. This has included educating local residents about their responsibilities and how to recycle more, sending warning letters, issuing Acceptable Behaviour Contracts against tenancy agreements, and taking court action with fixed penalty notices.

Fines have ranged from £1220 to £154 for fly-tipping offences

We’re also working with Newport City Council and Wastesavers to improve waste and recycling facilities in our communities to tackle fly-tipping. Customers living in flats have been given individual bins to manage their household waste where possible, and we’ve updated communal recycling facilities in many areas.

These changes together have had really positive impacts and reduced fly-tipping, one customer told us, “It's much better having individual bins, now we don’t see people fly-tipping their rubbish in the old communal bin area.”

Our Estates Supervisor, Stephen Thomas, commented, “Since the new bins have been introduced, we’ve seen great improvements with improved recycling and less waste being dumped. Lots of customers have told our colleagues how much better it is now, so it’s great to see our partnership work really seeing results.”

We’ll continue working with our partners to tackle fly-tipping across the city and hold those responsible accountable for their actions. We’re committed to making our communities tidier and will keep working with our partners to review waste management across the city.

If you see fly-tipping in your area you can report it here, or give us a call 01633 381 111. We may pass your report on to Newport City Council if the waste has been dumped on their land.
