a block of flats above high street shops

The flats are above shops on Upper Dock Street

The redevelopment of a landmark building in the heart of Newport city centre is close to being complete.

The four-storey block on Upper Dock Street is near Newport Indoor Market.

Newport City Homes is converting the upper floors into 12 one-bedroom and six two-bedroom apartments with some future residents enjoying views towards the river and the Riverfront Theatre.

Two businesses on the ground floor have been refitted as part of the project. Residents will enter through a new entrance area in a former shop.

Umbra Building Services is carrying out the work for the registered social landlord.

Matt Davies, executive director of development, from Newport City Homes, said: “Our Upper Dock Street development is going really well. We can’t wait to hand over the keys of these 18 much-needed apartments in the heart of the city centre to the new residents in the next few months. Working in such a busy part of the city has been a challenge but our contractors, Umbra Building Services, have made sure surrounding businesses have been kept up-to-date at each stage.

“It is a fantastic location, being so close to the shops and amenities with the added benefit of easy access to the nearby bus and train station. We know the apartments we are building are in great demand, so this is important work to help the housing crisis in Wales, whilst playing our part in the regeneration of the city centre.”

Graham Kuhlmann of TSD Group, senior project manager for the scheme, said: “Despite the major challenges facing the contractors and employers throughout the entire project including Covid-19 and the cost of living crisis, the team is carrying out a fantastic refurbishment of a vacant building in the heart of the city.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved for working so hard to get us to this stage and we look forward to handing over the keys in the near future.”
