We spoke to our Head of Communities and Wellbeing Dave Johnson about why these awards are so important...

Which award is Newport City Homes sponsoring, and why?

"We're supporting the 'Diversity in the Community Award' this year. One of our core values is to be an inclusive housing provider, supporting our customers, the wider communities we serve and as an employer. We believe that a home is more than just bricks and mortar.

"By our customers feeling connected to the community they live in, opportunities are created for people to grow, succeed and live their best lives. I am therefore delighted that Newport City Homes can recognise individuals and groups working towards this same goal through the Pride in Gwent 'Diversity in the Community Award'."

Why are these awards so important?

"The individuals and groups nominated in these awards don’t do what they do for the recognition or the praise, they do it because they’re working hard to improve their neighbourhoods.

"They are ordinary people who carry out extraordinary work in their community. I feel it’s important, through this award, to give these unsung heroes the ’thank you’ they deserve and take the opportunity to shine a light on the inspiring work they do!"

How would you sum up what Pride in Gwent means to you?

"For me personally, Gwent is my home and where I have worked in public service for most of my working life. My extended family live across the county and it is a source of real pride that there are so many people who work so hard to helping the communities in which we all live to continue to grow and thrive.

"The power of events like this lies in connecting communities, reducing social isolation, and celebrating difference. Hearing the many stories of courage, fortitude, and selflessness, often in the most challenging of circumstances celebrated in these awards are truly inspirational."
