This year, Newport City Homes will be taking part in Plantlife’s bee-friendly campaign, No Mow May.

The campaign encourages individuals, social landlords and stakeholders to help bees, butterflies, and other wildlife by letting wildflowers grow on lawns and green spaces throughout May instead of mowing them.

We know some residents have concerns about litter and dog fouling increasing when the grass is longer, so this year, we’ll still be cutting a 1m boundary near all footpaths.

We’ll also still be mowing some areas where the grass needs to be short for safety reasons, like on road corners.

The areas where we plan to let nature do its thing this year are…

  • Ben Johnson Way
  • Barrie Gardens
  • Avon Close
  • Blackwater
  • Broadmead Park Soakaways
  • Old Barn Estate
  • Ringwood Hill
  • Mooreland Park
  • Underwood

Here’s some photos of what happened when we left the grass to grow last year – the flowers make sure there’s enough food for our pollinators, like bees and butterflies, which are so important to our ecosystems.

The UK has lost nearly 97% of flower rich meadows since the 1970’s.

A healthy lawn with some long grass and wildflowers benefits wildlife, tackles pollution and can even lock away carbon below ground – and best of all, to reap these benefits all you have to do is… well, nothing.

We'll start back up with our usual schedule of mowing in June.
