The GAVO awards celebrate the incredible work of volunteers in Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire and Newport. The awards are an opportunity to say thank you to those that make a positive impact in their community. This year, NCH sponsored their Inclusion category.

Our very own community partners, The Menshed group, who have quite literally ‘made’ a difference to people’s lives, were honoured with a Certificate of Commendation at this year's ceremony.

This group of volunteers known as ‘Shedders’ belong to ‘Newport Men’s Sheds’ which is a successful concept aimed at establishing community groups specifically around the needs of men.

Life presents many challenges; retirement, unemployment, physical or mental ill health and some men can find themselves becoming socially isolated or lonely.

Run by volunteers, the Newport Men’s Shed ethos is ‘Shoulder to Shoulder in the Community’ which fosters a sense of belonging, acceptance, and fellowship and whilst primarily aimed at men, they have some female members too.

Hosted by NCH at our Malpas Depot, the volunteers work on community sponsored projects and deliver carpentry and technology-based projects to organisations such as SCOPE, Newport City Homes, Hospitals, Schools, as well as to individuals with particular needs.

Community Development Facilitator, Michael Parry-Jones nominated the group for this award and said, “The 'Shedders' have done tremendous work supporting and helping so many good causes and communities across the city.

"The ‘Shedders’ have been extremely vocal on how this project has given them a reason to enjoy life again”.

"It is outstanding to see the support NCH has given to the group over the last year result in the group being formally recognised for their outstanding achievements in the community."
