Five homes have been built in Newport that meet the highest standard of energy efficiency.

Newport City Homes worked with YourSpace Projects Ltd to build the terrace of two-bed homes at Vale Mews in Gaer that have been given an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) A rating.

Each home has state-of-the-art technology to keep customers’ energy bills to a minimum. The walls and frame of the homes are made from EPS panels which are filled with concrete to keep homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Customers can use a mobile phone app to control their light and heating and this will record data on how and when energy is used in their home. This information will help the heating system adapt so they can save more money.

Wondrwall, a company that specialises in installing technology that automates how homes use energy, did the work.

Matt Davies, executive director of development at Newport City Homes, said: “The technology in these homes is incredible. We have used intelligent heating software combined with air source heat pumps and infra-red radiator panels.

“There are different heating and hot water systems being used in the  homes so we can see how they perform when used by families in normal day-to-day life. All of the houses have solar panels but we are testing different ways to see how the electricity generated can be used immediately or stored for future use

“For example, one home has a battery that will keep costs down by charging up at times when the tariffs are cheapest. This will mean the family can use the electricity that is stored at peak times but will have only paid the lower price.

“We are really excited to bring these highest rated energy efficient homes to the city to help us plan how we will use technology in the homes we build in the future.”
