Chris’ apprentice story- “My mum screamed down the phone when I was offered the job”

Chris Colcombe will never forget the moment he found out his application to join our finance team through our Academy was successful.

“I was working in a call centre in market research. When the NCH role was offered to me, I was in work. They rang my mum. I saw three missed calls on my phone. She was screaming down the phone and telling me to ring NCH back but it was 6.30pm and I said I couldn’t call back at night.

“That was in April 2018. After three to four months in the Academy scheme the apprenticeship in the insurance and finance role came up. I always wanted to work in finance but didn’t have the experience.

“During the last month or so, I was asked to work on the implementation of the new payroll system.

“The Academy gave me that experience and led to the apprenticeship which has allowed me to pursue a career in finance.

“I’ve been in college every Thursday. During lockdown that went on to Zoom. I’ve been able to work through my qualifications from level 2 to 4 with the AAT (The Association of Accounting Technicians).

“There were exams every six to ten weeks. Sometimes I would have an exam in the morning and would be back in work in the afternoon.

“I finished my apprenticeship, the AAT qualifications, six months ago and got my certifications at end of September.

“Starting an apprenticeship with NCH was a great start to working in finance and allowed me to know what I want to do in my career.”

Apprentice opportunities with NCH
