Following a number of queries from residents living near the Sequoia trees on the corner of Avon Close and Tamar Close, we sort advise from Newport City Council tree officer and our tree consultant. The Sequoias are part of the original planting scheme/species selection from the time the area was developed.

Unfortunately, after inspecting the trees and the surrounding hard landscape, taking in account the trees current size, location, age and the predicted future size, the trees are to be regrettably felled to be relocated (not lost for good).

It’s a decision that we do not take lightly but they have outgrown their location and they are still growing. The trees are still only semi mature for the species so potentially have many more metres of development of overall mass to come both above and below ground. The problems the trees are causing means that no amount of remedial works that would help or solve the current and future issues.

We will replant at each location affected  with a species with that will be more suitable for the location long term. In addition to the specific location replanting areas, a minimum of four Sequoia’s will be planted in an area well away from structures, services and people. This allows the Sequoias of Bettws to continue in the landscape but simply in areas where they can flourish and reach their full potential without risk to structures, services or cause a nuisance.

Weather permitting the felling of the trees will start early January with replanting  shortly after. When the trees are being felled traffic management will be in place, so in advance we apologise  for any inconvenience.
