Over 3,000 Newport City Homes tenants will see their income drop by £20 a week next month when the Government’s Universal Credit increase comes to an end.

We're encouraging tenants to get in touch if they are concerned about falling into money difficulties.

In response to the pandemic in 2020, Chancellor Rishi Sunak introduced a temporary £20 increase to universal credit payments. It was extended in March 2021 for a further six months and the Chancellor has stated they will not be extended any further.

Sharon Wilkins, Deputy Director of Homes and Communities at Newport City Homes, said: “We are worried that some of our customers may not realise this cut is coming. Research carried out across Wales showed that the majority of social housing tenants were not aware the uplift was temporary. We believe this to be the case in Newport and want to make sure people are ready to budget for the drop in income.

“People will be used to receiving this extra money so it will be a shock to lose £1,040 a year. We want to remind all of our customers that we have expert staff ready to help if you feel you will get into money difficulties, please get in touch with us and we’ll do all we can to help.

“The £20 Universal Credit top up payment officially ends on 6 October, but the exact date of the cut will vary depending on the day someone usually receives their UC payment.”

If you are a Newport City Homes tenant who is concerned about the impact this cut will have on your finances, call Newport City Homes on 01633 381 111 or email enquiries@newportcityhomes.com.

Our specially trained staff can help you receive the financial support you may be entitled to through grants, funding, or other benefits.

A total of 3059 tenants are affected by the change.
