We’re upgrading the district heating system in Duffryn and are inviting the local community to take a behind the scenes tour of the Energy Centre. We’ll show how the biomass boiler works, talk about its history, how it runs off wood as a sustainable source, and explain what’s happening next.

The system supplies heating and hot water to over a thousand homes in the area. It’s supported by over seven kilometres of underground pipework.

Following a series of leaks earlier this year, we’ve recently appointed principal contractor, Vital Energi, to upgrade the pipework. But before the work gets fully underway, we wanted to offer some guided tours with our expert team.

The boiler house tours are planned for:

  • Monday 9 October, 10:30am – 3pm
  • Tuesday 10 October, 10:30am – 3pm
  • Wednesday 11 October, 3pm – 6.30pm

If you can’t join us in person, we also have a Facebook live tour on Friday 13 October at 1pm on our NCH Connected Facebook group.

We’ll also be out and about in our communities, offering you the chance to chat with us and answer any questions you might have. Join us at the following venues:

  • Newport City Homes, 195 Upper Dock Street: Wednesday 4 October, 11am – 5pm
  • Duffryn Community Link: Wednesday 11 October, 12pm – 3pm
  • Nightingale Court (Residents only): Thursday 12 October, 10am – 12pm
  • Aneurin Bevan Court (Residents only): Thursday 12 October, 2pm – 4pm

Sonia Furzland, Executive Director of Operations at Newport City Homes, said:

"We're grateful for the patience and understanding of our Duffryn residents as we undertake this significant and essential upgrade. We're doing all that we can to work as quickly and efficiently as possible and these community engagement events are a great opportunity for us to speak with the community and respond to any questions or concerns they might have. At Newport City Homes, we value every opportunity to spend time with our communities and build strong relationships. We encourage all of our customers who have any queries to speak with us so we can continue working together - now and into the future."

Please note that your safety is our highest priority, and the above tour dates are subject to change based on weather conditions, temperature, and system pressures. In the event of cancellation, we’ll let you know as soon as possible.
