Hello!

Welcome to our July update about our work in Somerton

On 3 July, our Resident Steering Group met online via Teams and in person at Nexus House. We had 5 residents, and 2 councillors attend. We also had Tony and Phillipa from Oxford Architects alongside Pravin DeSilva, Phillip Lott and Rebecca Sluman from Newport City Homes.

Project plan

We’re looking to purchase land, on Acacia Avenue, from Newport City Council. Once we have the approvals, we’ll submit a planning application for Acacia Avenue (Phase 1)

Design update

We will be submitting a planning application for Acacia Avenue (Phase 1) only. This will reduce risk and allows us to start this phase as soon as possible.

We’ve received approval for a Secure by Design Application. At the technical design stage, we’ll work with the Secure by Design team to finalise the details of the scheme.

We also talked about comments received at the community consultation on 8 February, and the review held with internal teams / departments. Please see July’s minutes for more details about these comments.

Work is underway on 3 of the 8 void properties being refurbished and prepared for re-letting. Each property will have damp proofing, a new kitchen and bathroom, heating and electrical upgrades, and external works to gardens, paths and steps where needed.

Communication

The Resident Steering Group have been pivotal in getting us to the planning application submission stage. While the design team work to finalise the application, these meetings will become quarterly as we’ll have less updates to share.

We will send letter to everyone in the coming weeks to update you on Acacia Avenue (Phase1)

Time and Date of Next Meeting
