Today, we’re getting clarity on our commonly asked questions about antisocial behaviour. From noise to criminal behaviour, find your answers here...
What are the rules about loud music?
Loud noise can be a nuisance to live with. If it’s impacting you, download the Noise App to keep a record. It’s available on Apple or Android phones. It records noise levels, which are then sent directly to social housing providers, environmental health, and community safety teams. Make sure to record regularly to build up evidence of the nuisance noise.
There’s a myth that loud music is only considered a problem after 11pm. This isn’t true. It doesn’t matter what time of day the noise is taking place; if it’s persistent and stops the peaceful enjoyment of your home, we can take action.
My neighbour has parties that go on until late. What can I do?
If the parties cause disturbance and go on beyond reasonable hours, report this to us immediately. Remember to use the Noise App to record the disturbances, or you can use the voice or video recorder on your phone. This will help us to assess the impact the noise is having on you and your community.
There are children making noise outside my home. What can I do?
We know that noise can be frustrating for long periods. We’re unable to act against these types of incidents. We’d advise talking to a parent or carer about the situation if you feel able to. If you feel unable to, you can report the situation to us and we may be able to help by calling the customer, sending a letter, or referring yourself and the neighbour to mediation.
What do I do if I think my neighbour is dealing drugs or involved in other criminal activity?
If you suspect any criminal behaviour, please contact the police in the first instance. This can range from drug dealing to neighbourhood violence. You can report to the police by calling 101 or contacting 999 if an emergency.
You can also report to Crimestoppers anonymously. Crimestoppers aren’t the police, but they’re an independent charity working to help communities. You can report incidents at crimestoppers-uk.org or calling 0800 555 111.
When you report to the police, contact us as soon as possible so we can link with them.
I can smell cannabis from my neighbour’s home. It’s illegal and the smell is impacting me. Can they be evicted?
Situations like this are challenging as there’s no straight answer. There will need to be a lot of evidence to persuade a county court to evict someone. We will do all that we can to help you wherever possible.
However, if the police find cannabis farms in the home, this might result in a criminal conviction. We may then be able to take some form of action if reasonable. Outcomes are on a case-by-case basis.
I’m concerned about my neighbours fighting and arguing in the street. What can I do?
If you’re worried about this, you can report this to the police via 101. If you’re worried that it’s an emergency, call 999. Once you’ve contacted the police, please let us know. We can link with the police to investigate further.
