It is an offence for dog owners not to remove their dog’s faeces from land including footpaths, grass verges, parks, playing fields and open spaces that are owned or maintained by Newport City Council or Newport City Homes.
Anyone found breaking the law can be issued with a fixed penalty notice of £75, while regular offenders or those failing to pay a fixed penalty can be prosecuted and fined up to £1,000.
It could also be seen as a breach of your tenancy agreement, which could lead to an injunction and even eviction.
Dog faeces can be harmful to human health. An infection called Toxocaracanis can cause blindness.
Anyone walking their dog should ensure they have bags or some other method of picking up dog mess with them. Any plastic bag can be used and the waste can be disposed of in any bin, as long as the bag is securely tied.
We are work closely with the council’s community safety and dog wardens to tackle the issue. They are patrolling the area every day and we are considering putting CCTV in problem areas.
