Universal Credit goes live in Newport tomorrow
14/11/2017
Universal Credit (UC) goes live in Newport tomorrow (Wednesday 15 November).

UC is a single monthly payment of benefit for people in and out work, and some single people in Newport already claim it.

However, from 15 November, families and couples making a new claim for benefit will also be expected to claim UC. People of Pension Credit age will remain unaffected.

Income services manager Rebecca Hunt explained: “To receive Universal Credit, you have to apply for and manage your claim online via the UC portal. To do this, you will need access to the internet and a computer.

“You will get one monthly payment for your household, and you will need to get used to budgeting your money throughout the month, especially if you have been used to receiving your benefit weekly or fortnightly. Your Universal Credit will be paid into your bank account.

“If you’re entitled to help with your rent - which UC refers to as housing costs - this will be included in the monthly payment and you will have to pay your rent to us.

“It takes around six weeks for your first payment to arrive after you make your claim, so we are recommending that people save some money ahead of being moved onto Universal Credit.”
